Flashcards in Lecture 7 (Digestive System) Deck (22):
1

Alimentary Canal

Digestive or gastrointestinal tract
1. Can break down both chemically and mechanically
2. Deals with excretion of waste
3. Deal with water balance
Composed of: mouth, teeth, tongue, phranyx, skeletal muscle, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, colon, rectum, pancreas, gall bladder

2

Tongue

Skeletal muscle
Frenulum holds the tongue down, too short can make sounds correctly, "tongue-tied"

3

Papillae

Found the tongue
Filiform: cones, fine projections that give appearance of the tongue
Fungiform: mushroom
Circumvalate: V shapened, include the test buds at the back of the tongue

4

Tonsil

huge collection of white blood cells
Lingual: base of the tongue
Pharyngeal = adenoids: throat
Palatine: tongue/ palate

5

Teeth Lose

Bone/ socket, will be reabosrobed make the jaw lighter

6

Cancers of the tongue

Chewing tobacco primary cause

7

GERD

Gastroesophegal reflux disease
"heart burn"
acid will enter by passing the sphincter
can cause cancer and ulcers
Blood from ulcers can increase risk of cancer

8

Stomach

Acts like a blender, doesnt absorb nutrients

9

Duodenum Dumping

Too much food too fast

10

Ulcers in the stomach

Not eating enough, digest stomach, can cause bacterial infection

11

Diet and Cancer

USA = colon
high fat diets deficient in fiber
Asian = stomach
Spices and ingredients and msg
FIX
Low fat high fiber

12

Greater Omentum

Lots of blood vessel and white blood cells
Covers all intestines
Shock absorber
Lymph node site

13

Duodenum

Mucus and alkaline fluid, correct the ph from the stomach acid
Protect against ulcers
Ulcers here will show up as dark stool

14

Jejunum

Permanent folds, 8 to 10 feet long

15

Ileum

Smoother 10 to 12 feet long

16

Colon

has droplet of fat on the outside, fold, 3 feet long

17

Vermiform appendix

Tiny hole, near the beginning of the colon, if blocked, burst creates infection to the intestines
Appendicitis of the vermiform
Lymph nodeals

18

Appendix of the ileum

Meckle's diverticulum
2 x 2 x 2 rule
two proximal of illeceual valve
two inches long
Two percent of pop
Its a genetic condiction
If born with it can burst

19

Diarrhea

Food goes to rapidly through the colon
liquid stool cause of secretion through out the way
the colon major role is water absorption
Caused: infection, viral or stress
Tremendous water loss
Children with cholera quickly die because of water loss

20

Hemerroids

Veins at the end of the rectium
can devo varicose veins
occurs when not enough water and stiff stool
tear the veins

21

Polyps

devo abnormal growth of the lining
can devo into cancer

22

parasites

can go into the blood stream
