Leisure- time spend away from work or school and free from obligations ( free from chores and activities)

Physical Recreation- a physical activity or pastime that promotes health, relaxation and enjoyment (yoga, pilates)

Play- take past in a sport or activity for enjoyment (less structured activities)

Sport- an activity that involves physical exertion and skill, either as an individual or as a part of a team competing against another person or team. (needs skill, and has structure)

Peer influences
Facilities (standard of facilities around you will influence what you do eg. trying to surf in a city not near a coast)
Where you live/geography (depends on what facilities you have near you and what the climate is)
Culture and tradition (some cultures promote or disapprove certain activities (india=cricket, middle east frowns upon women doing sport)
Social circumstances (
Interests (influenced by media and their family, outdoor vs indoors)
Family influence
Age (restrictions of age to prevent injuries, older people have lower levels of fitness which might impact their choice of activity)

Interests
Influenced by the media and their family. Indoors vs outdoors
Social circumstances
Cost taking part might be an issue (e.g. skiing). There can also be gender a bias (wrestling).
Peer & family influences
Their family may traditionally play a sport. Younger people are influenced more by their peers
Facilities
Standard of facilities around you will influence what you do. E.g. trying to surf in a city not near a cost
Geography
Depends on what facilities you have near you and what the climate is.
Culture/tradition
Some cultures promote or disapprove certain activities.
India = cricket
Middle East have historically frowned on women taking part in sport
Factors that influence the growth in leisure activities
Advances in technology (in home and workplace)- means reduction in time needed to do household chores / more people do less physically demanding jobs due to technological advances in machinery)
Wider media coverage (greater media coverage and creation of role models and exposure of more sports creates interest and increases participation / sports and exercise has become more fashionable)
Improvements in healthcare (people generally have better access to medical care (physiotherapists) and live longer so are able to participate for longer)
Better awareness of health benefits (people are more aware of the benefits of exercise, and there may be better onks between medical professionals and leisure providers)
Improvements in travel methods (methods: public and private transport has improved so more people have access to transport/ urbanisation has meant fewer people live in inaccessible places)
Reduced cost of equipment (as technology has improved the type and quality of equipment, the cost has reduced to become more available to people)
More leisure facilities (governments / local authorities / voluntary / private providers recognise the increased demand so provide extra facilities due to legislation / community need or for profit)
Increase in leisure time (people have longer holidays/shorter working days/people working at home can control their working hours/ more people taking retirement)
