skill continuums Flashcards
basic, fine, complex, open, gross, closed (19 cards)
the six types of skills
- basic
- complex
- fine
- gross
- open
- closed
open skill
skills that are affected by the environment. Performer has to react and adjust to the situation that will continuously change
fine skills
small, intricate movements that need precise and high levels of control, technique and accuracy.
gross skills
use large groups of muscles to produce big, powerful, movements ( usually by arms and legs)
closed
where you control everything, the environment of other performers have no effect on it.
complex
difficult skills that need high levels of coordination and concentration
basic
easy, simple skills that need little coordination and thought. learned at young age
example of basic skill
running
example of complex sill
layup
example of closed skill
free throw
open example
A footballer has to react to the defender closing him down and then choose whether to pass or dribble around them.
example of fine skill
tipping the ball over the blocker in volley
example of gross
olympic weightlifting
whats a skill
the learned ability to bring about a predetermined result with maximum efficiency and certainty.
whats ability
an inherited trait (such as speed, agility, coordination, flexibility, balance and reaction time) that helps determine an individual’s potential to learn or acquire a skill.
main differences between skill and ability (2)
A skill is something that is practised and sport-specific ( like a dig in volleyball). It’s learned over time
- Ability is something you’re born with (innate). Even though you may have a natural ability,
you’d still need to train and practice to achieve maximal performance.
Factors that cause variations in the level of skill
(8)
Age and maturity ( when you are older you are more mature and so are also more alert to the movement your body s+does and more in control)
Culture ( in china the culture is table tennis so nearly everybody knows how to play it and is good at it as it’s common)
Motivation ( lone sports need a lot of motivation as you are alone in it like swimming and running)
Anxiety (finals can make you have high anxiety and that can cause you to change and slow your thought process down so you’re more likely to make a mistake)
Levels of arousal (arousal us how pumped you are, so if you have too low arousal for example in basketball performance won’t be as good but too high arousal also isn’t good because you’re too focused)( also depends on sports)
Facilities ( depending where you play that will affect your performance
Environment ( wind, sun, pollution levels)
Teaching and coaching ( if someone coaches you something very well you will be better than someone who has a coach that has no idea of what he’s talking about)
