How has Benidorm positively changed?
• High quality hotels and restaurants
• Lots of jobs created positive multiplier effect
• Some subsidised housing
How has Benidorm negatively changed?
• Lack of community between British and Spanish residents
• Lack of affordable housing so working class locals may be forced out
• High congestion during peak months
• Many hen and stag dos cause antisocial behaviour
• Jobs are only seasonal
Describe demographical changes to Benidorm as tourism rose
• Ageing population (mean resident rises above 50 by 2000s)
• Becomes very culturally diverse
• Has image of drunken tourists and wild nightlife
• Larger number of retired people particularly Britons
Why may people migrate to Benidorm?
• People may go there to retire
• Economic migrants especially from SA due to being able to speak Spanish
• Also from NEEs or LICs in Europe becomes easy to travel there as Spain is in EU
What is are geographical information systems (GIS)?
• Computer system for capturing, checking and displaying data related to positions on Earth’s surface
• Based on using layers of information, such as streets, buildings and vegetation
What is geospatial data?
• Data that has location information tied to it such as coordinates, a country etc.
• This can then be used to plot location of data
How is geospatial data used?
• Benidorm residents can be represented on a world map using flow lines
• This shows spatial patterns as you can identify specific regions of the world where large numbers of migrants have come from such as EU
