How did deindustrialisation cause the decline of the docks?
• Decline of secondary industry in UK due to cheaper labour costs in other countries
• UK shifted to tertiary industry
What is containerisation?
• Many ships used this causing them to become bigger so couldn’t navigate ship canal
• As a result, Manchester couldn’t adapt
How did trade patterns change?
• More trade with SE Asia and Europe but Manchester ship canal faced Atlantic in the west
• Ships from SE Asia and EU came from the east
Describe direct consequences of dock closure
• 3000 jobs
• Land was abandoned and derelict
• 30% unemployment
• High rates of crime
Describe the negative multiplier effect after dock closure in Manchester
• Loss of jobs
• Emigration so shops and services close and community collapses meaning no tax
• Housing abandoned and property value decreases
• Crime increases in desperation
• So area left undesirable and water left polluted and dirty
