I arrive in Guatemala on The Day of the Dead, November 1st.
وصلت إلى غواتيمالا في يوم الموتى، الأول من نوفمبر.
I’m curious about this holiday, so I go to the cemetery to see what’s happening.
كنت فضوليًا بشأن هذا العيد، لذا ذهبت إلى المقبرة لأرى ما يحدث.
What I find is quite interesting.
ما وجدته كان مثيرًا للاهتمام.
The atmosphere is like a party.

There are people everywhere.

Families are sitting around the graves of their dead ancestors.

They clean the graves and add fresh flowers.

I walk through the cemetery and admire the beauty of all the colorful flowers.

There is also color in the sky, because many kids are flying kites.
كان هناك أيضًا ألوان في السماء، لأن العديد من الأطفال كانوا يطيرون الطائرات الورقية.
Some families are having a picnic next to the graves.
كانت بعض العائلات تتناول الطعام(تتنزه) بجانب القبور.
They eat, drink, and chat together.
كانوا يأكلون ويشربون ويتحدثون معًا.
People laugh and smile.
الناس يضحكون ويبتسمون.
In the United States, cemeteries are always somber.
في الولايات المتحدة، تكون المقابر دائمًا كئيبة.
We certainly never have festivals or parties next to graves.
نحن بالتأكيد لا نقيم مهرجانات أو حفلات بجانب القبور.
We don’t laugh or play music or fly kites in cemeteries either.
لا نضحك أو نعزف الموسيقى أو نطير الطائرات الورقية في المقابر أيضًا.
I find that I prefer the Guatemalan approach.
أجد أنني أفضل النهج الغواتيمالي.
I like the way they remember and celebrate those who have passed away.

I like that they acknowledge death, instead of denying it the way Americans do.

I like that there is life, as well as death, in their cemeteries.
أحب أن هناك حياة، وكذلك موت، في مقابرهم
Guatemalans call it “The Day of the Dead”, but it is also a day to appreciate life.
يسمي الغواتيماليون هذا اليوم “يوم الموتى”، لكنه أيضًا يوم لتقدير الحياة
