Life sciences - week 7 Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is a chemical Bond?
A lasting attraction between atoms, ions or molecules that enables formation
Four types of chemical bonds
Covalent bonds
Hydrogen bonds
Metallic bonds
Ionic bonds
What elements form ionic bonds?
Calcium and oxygen
What is hydrogen bonding?
The attraction between a hydrogen atom and small electronegative atoms. it occurs when hydrogen is bonded to either nitrogen oxygen and fluoride
Why is hydrogen bond important for life?
It provides many of the critical, life sustaining properties of water. stabilizes the structure of proteins and DNS, which is the building block of cells
Mass
Mass is the quantity of matter in the physical body
Weight
Weight is the force by which the earth attracts towards its center
What is a decomposition chemical reaction?
A reaction in which compound breaks down into two or more simpler substances
Does a catalyst slow down or speed up the rate of reaction to make better products
Catalyst speed up reactions
What is an exothermic reaction?
A reaction in which there is a net release of energy, called exothermic
Why is ethanol soluble in water?
Due to the ability of its hydroxyl (OH) group to form hydrogen bonds with water molecules
