Life Sciences - Week 8 Flashcards
(19 cards)
What defines the acidity of the solution in the context of acids and bases?
The concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution. more hydrogen ions is considered more acidic
What is pH?
pH is a measure of how acidic or basic a substance or solution is
What are the ranges of the pH scale?
The pH scale ranged from 0 -14
What is does the pH level of 7 mean?
It is neutral
What does the pH level less that 7 mean?
Indicates its acidic
What does the pH level of more than 7 mean?
Indicates it is basic
What is the normal blood pH levels in the human body?
7.35-7.45
What term is used to describe the states of excess acid in the body?
Acidosis - when bodily fluids become too acidic
What term is used to describe the state of the body fluids are too alkaline?
Alkalosis - the bodily fluids are too alkaline (high in pH)
What are enzymes?
Proteins that help speed up chemical reactions in the body
Enzymes that breakdown Sugar Sucrose?
Sucrase
Enzyme that breaks down Sugar lactose?
Lactase
Enzyme that breaks down Carbohydrates?
Amylase
Enzyme that breaks down Lipid (fats)
Lipase
Enzymes that break down proteins?
Protease
What are the main buffers in blood?
Bicarbonate, Phosphates, hemoglobin and plasma proteins
What are acids and bases?
Two types of chemical substances that play a crucial role in various chemical reactions and biological processes
What does ‘pH’ stand for?
Power of Hydrogen
What is the human tolerance range for pH?
7.35-7.45
