Liver, Pancreas and Gall Bladder Flashcards
(43 cards)
What does the liver and pancreas grow as in the gut?
An outgrowth
What is the parenchyma of the liver and pancreas composed of?
Glandular epithelial cells
Functions of the liver?
Oxidise triglycerides to produce energy, Synthesize plasma lipoproteins, cholesterol and plasma proteins. Detoxification of metabolic waste products, toxins and drugs
What is the liver covered by?
A collagenous connective tissue capsule, covered by mesothelial cells derived from the peritoneum
What is the liver made up of?
Lobules
The liver has a branch of which vein?
Hepatic vein called the centrolobular vein
What are the portal triads?
Branches of the vessels which enter at the porta hepatis, the portal vein and the hepatic artery. Also the branch that leaves the porta hepatis is the bile duct
What is the bile duct lines with?
Simple cuboidal cells called cholangiocytes
What is also included in the tracts?
Lymphatic vessels
What are the main cells of the liver?
Hepatocytes
What is the function of hepatocytes?
Have spaces in between for blood to flow through called sinusoids
What are the sinusoids lined with?
Endothelial cells
What is the space called between the sinusoids and the hepatocytes?
Space of disse
What type of collagen is found in the space of disse?
Type I
Where are hepatic stellate cells found?
Scattered in the space of disse
What are hepatic stellate cells?
Modified fibroblasts and make connective tissue
What do the hepatic stellate cells contain?
Vitamine A within fat droplets in their cytoplasm
In some pathological conditions what does the hepatic stellate cells transform into?
Myofibroblasts and produce scar tissue in the liver
What are scattered within the sinusoids?
Resident macrophages called Kupffer cells
What is the function of Kupffer cells?
Remove particulate matter from the blood and help remove worn out red blood cells
What are the contents in bile?
water, ions, phospholipids, bilirubin and bile salts
What is bilirubin?
It is a pigment which results from the breakdown of haemoglobin in the spleen and causes the brown colour of faeces.
What are the bile salts necessary for in bile?
Emulsification of fats in the digestive tracts
What do all hepatocytes produce?
Bile
