Lymphatic System + spleen Flashcards
Supports the Circulatory System + info about the spleen (23 cards)
What is the lymphatic system?
A body- wide network of vessels that traps fluid escaped from blood vessels, and returns it to the blood supply
What does the lymphatic system do for tissues?
Stops tissues swelling
What does the lymphatic system absorb?
Harmful bacteria and other dangerous substances
How does the lymphatic system work? Part 1: blood pressure
Blood pressure forces fluid from tiny blood vessels into surrounding tissues. Most fluid finds its way into tiny blood vessels, but some enters the lymph vessels.
How does the lymphatic system work? Part 2: thoracic duct
Fluid flows towards the thoracic duct or to the right lymphatic duct The forces that drive it are muscle activity and pulsating blood vessels
How does the lymphatic system work? Part 3: lymph travels
Most lymph travels upwards. From the thoracic duct lymph drains back into the blood supply near theleft shoulder.
How does the lymphatic system work? Part 4: draining
From the right lymphatic duct lymph drains back into the bloodstream near the right shoulder
What prevents fluid from tiny blood vessels flowing back down when it travels?
Valves in lymph
Structure of the lymphatic system: similar to what?
A system of rivers and tributaries
What are lymph?
A salty straw-coloured liquid (like the fluid part of blood), but with less protein
Structure of the lymphatic system: vessels
The systems many tiny vessels join up to form a few large ones
Structure of the lymphatic system: names of vessels
Thoracic duct, right lymphatic duct, lymph nodes.
Structure of the lymphatic system: thoracic duct
Largest of all vessels; runs up the body in front of the spine
Structure of the lymphatic system: right lymphatic duct
Another large vessel; runs through the right arm and shoulder
Structure of the lymphatic system: lymph nodes
Bumpy swellings that occur in the neck, armpits, above the groin and elsewhere
What do lymph nodes contain?
White cells that absorb harmful substances such as bacteria
Lymph circulation:
Heart then artery, then capillaries, then vein, and then lymph duct
What does the spleen do? (basic idea)
Plays a part in circulation and combating infection
Structure and location of the spleen:
A spongy, fist - sized purplish object;
Located in front of the spine, below the diaphragm, and left of and behind the stomach
Function of the spleen:
Manufactures some of the blood formed in the body before birth.
Function of the spleen: what it contains
Contains cells that kill old or injured blood cells and destroy bacteria and parasites.
Function of the spleen: what it produces
Antibodies
What are antibodies?
Proteins attacking viruses and other agents of infection
