Nervous system: 3 systems Flashcards
Peripheral, sympathetic, parasympathetic (8 cards)
PNS
Peripheral Nervous System
What do the PNS nerves form?
The somatic and autonomic nervous systems
What does the somatic system involve (PNS)?
Sensory nerves sending signals from sense organs to the CNS, and motor nerves sending signals from the CNS to muscles under voluntary control
What does the autonomic nervous system comprise?
The sympathetic and parasympathetic systems, producing actions that balance one another; handling activities outside conscious control (hypothalamus probably)
What does the sympathetic nervous system do?
Sends blood to the brain, heart, lungs etc. preparing the body for bodily exertion
How do nerves act on different regions of the body? (sympathetic nervous system)
They come from the spinal cord’s thoracic and lumbar regions and pass through nerve knots (ganglia)
What does the parasympathetic nervous system do?
Dominates the sympathetic nervous system when we’re at rest. Reduces much of the activity that system triggers, reducing heart rate but sending blood to the intestines, and increasing output of digestive juices
How do nerves act on different regions of the body?(parasympathetic nervous system)
Nerves from the brainstem and spinal cord’s sacral act on different organs
