Respiratory System Flashcards
Structure, How it works, breathing, voice (22 cards)
What does the respiratory system do?
Lets air in and out of the body
What does the respiratory system provide?
Provides oxygen to the body cells for burning food to produce energy
What is removed by the respiratory system?
Carbon dioxide waste from the body
What occupies most of the chest cavity?
The lungs (‘2 Bags’)
What works the lungs?
Muscles
What links the lungs to the nose and mouth?
The Trachea
How do we breathe: Part1 nose
Breathe in air through nose (or mouth). Air grows warm and moist on passing through the nasal passage and pharynx
How do we breathe: Part 2 trachea + bronchi
Air continues down the windpipe/trachea, except when shut off by the epiglottis as you swallow. Air then passes through two bronchi to the lungs
How do we breathe:Part 3 inside the lungs
Inside the lungs bronchi branch out into smaller tubes called bronchioles. Bronchioles end in alveolar sacs (alveoli)
Alveoli
Clusters of tiny chambers at the end of bronchioles
What supports a network of capillaries?
Thin walls of alveoli
Gasses pass through what (respiratory)?
Through alveolar walls between the lungs and blood supply
What operates the lungs when breathing?
The diaphragm and muscles that move the ribs up and out
Diaphragm:
A muscular sheet below the lungs
How do we breathe in?
Ribs move up and out and the diaphragm moves down. This expands the chest cavity and draws air into the lungs
How do we breathe out?
Ribs move down and in and the diaphragm moves up. This contracts the chest cavity and forces air out of the lungs
What do vocal sounds depend on?
Special structures in the body’s airways
How does the voice work?
Breathed out air flows through the larynx. Vocal cords form a V- shaped opening across the larynx. When we speak, these tauten, narrowing the opening. Breathed out air vibrates the cords; the longer the cords the higher the pitch.
What gives resonance? (voice)
The nasal cavity
How do sounds vary when we speak?
With positions of the tongue, lips and teeth
Larynx
Voice box; a broad part of the upper windpipe protected by tough cartilage
Vocal cords
Two bands of tissue across the larynx
