Endocrine system: endocrine glands Flashcards
Function + structure (38 cards)
What does the hypothalamus + pituitary glands do?
Controls some body functions through nerve mechanisms (but more via the pituitary gland)
What is considered the ‘leader of the endocrine orchestra’?
Pituitary gland
Structure of the hypothalamus and pituitary gland
Nerve tissue links the thumb -tip size hypothalamus to the pea -sized pituitary (comprising of posterior and anterior lobes)
What hormones does the hypothalamus produce?
Vasopressin (antidiuretic hormone) - ADP and oxytocin
What does the pituitary gland’s posterior lobe do?
Stores and releases the hormone oxytocin
What does ADP (antidiuretic hormone) do?
Controls water output of the kidneys (controls how much you pee)
What is the function of oxytocin during birth?
Produces contractions of the uterus
What does the release of hormones from the hypothalamus also make the pituitary’s anterior lobe do?
Produce other hormones
What are the other hormones produced by the pituitary’s anterior lobe?
Thyrotrophic hormone, adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH), gonadotrophins, prolactin and growth hormone
What hormone controls the thyroid gland?
Thyrotrophic hormone
What hormone controls the cortex of each adrenal gland?
Adrenocorticotrophic hormone
What hormone controls the ovaries?
Gonadotrophins
What hormone produces breast milk?
Prolactin
What promotes growth in children?
Growth hormone
Location of the thyroid gland
In the neck, wrapped the front of the windpipe, with a large lobe on either side
Thyrotrophin (TSH)
A hormone from the pituitary gland that stimulates the thyroid to produce thyroxine and triiodothyronine
Function of the hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine
Regulate growth and mental development, and calcitonin (which helps build bone)
Location of the parathyroid glands
They lie in/near the thyroid’s lobes
What hormone do the parathyroid glands produce?
Parathormone
Function of the hormone parathormone
Keeps up the blood’s level of calcium by taking some from the bone
Function of the pancreas
Produces substances that help to break down foodstuffs in digestion, and controls the amount of sugar in blood
Structure of the pancreas
Leaf - shaped, below the stomach; a tube connects it to the duodenum
Where are the enzymes produced by the pancreas released?
Releases enzymes through its duct into the duodenum
The enzymes released into the duodenum help break down what?
Protein, starch, sugar and fat
