Mesocestoides spp. Flashcards
(13 cards)
Mesocestoides spp
- Mesocestoides lineatus: 30-80cm
- Mesocestoides vogae: 10-40cm
- Mesocestoides corti: 4-8cm
IH of Mesocestoides spp
- 1st IH: Soil mites
- 2nd IH: Amphibians, reptiles, birds, human
FH of Mesocestoides spp
carnivores
Location of Mesocestoides spp
- 2nd IH: peritoneal cavity & organs
- FH: SI
Metacestode of Mesocestoides spp
- 1st IH: cysticercoid
- 2nd IH: tetrathyridium
LC of Mesocestoides spp
- Gravid, motile proglottids are shed in the faeces in FH. Proglottid contain many eggs within the parauterine organ.
- Oncospheres/proglottids are ingested by the 1st IH. The oncosphere develops into a cysticercoid inside.
- The 2nd IH consumes the arthropod, and tetrathyridium (infective larval stage) develop in the peritoneal cavity and organs.
- FH are infected after ingesting tetrathyridium in infected IH. Humans can be PH.
- Tetrathyridium develops into an adult in the small intestine of FH.
PP: 16-20 days
Morphology of Mesocestoides spp
Small to medium, Scolex: 4 distinct suckers, rostellum with hooks missing, 100-500 proglottids
Genital pore: 1 set, located dorsally. Parauterine organ; sac-like structure within proglottid that store fertilized eggs
Pathogenesis of Mesocestoides spp
Tetrathyridium stage in car make them able to reproduce asexually, cause severe peritonitis, pleuritis and ascites.
Weak infection – asymptomatic
Peritoneal tetrathyridiosis: tetrathyridium invade peritoneal caity or other tissues (Car - abberant/2nd IH) –> peritonitis, pleuritis and ascites.
CS of Mesocestoides spp
Asymptomatic, enteritis and diarrhea in strong infection. abdominal discofort/pain, peritonitis, ascites.
Dx of Mesocestoides spp
- FH: Coprological, finding proglottids and eggs, flotation (Kozak-Magra)
- IH: ultrasound, CT scan, serology, PCR
TX of Mesocestoides spp
IH: Fenbendazole, albendazole, surgery
FH: Praziquantel, niclozamide
Control of Mesocestoides spp
Environmental sanitation, rodent destruction, insecticides
Zoonotic Mesocestoides spp
Mesocestoides lineatus
