Taenia ovis - cysticercus ovis Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is the intermediate host (IH) for Taenia ovis?
Sheep, goat
FH of Taenia ovis?
canids
Location Taenia ovis?
IH: Striated muscles; Cardiac, diaphragm, masseter, tongue, thigh & shoulder muscles
FH: SI
Morphology Taenia ovis?
Up to 2 m. Scolex with 4 suckers, rostellum with 2 rows of 22-32 rostellar hooks, neck, 500-1000 proglottids
Pathogenesis of Taenia ovis?
Usually non-clinical. Larva migration may cause mild tissue damage. Cysts in muscle
CS of Taenia ovis?
IH: Asymptomatic, detec cysts at slaughter
FH: usually asymptomatic, mild gastrointestinal signs, gravid proglottids in feces.
Dx of Taenia ovis?
IH: meat inspection - cysts in heart, diaphragm, skeletal muscles
FH: flotation (Breza), observation of proglottids in feces/around anus
Tx of Taenia ovis?
IH: none
FH: Praziquantel
Control of Taenia ovis?
IH: proper disposal of sheep carcass & offal, educate farm workers & shepherds, meat inspection - detect cyst at slaughter
FH: Regular deworming, keep dogs away from sluaghter areas, avoid contamination of pastures with dog feces.
LC of Taenia ovis?
- Adult taenia is attached to SI of FH. Mature, egg-containing proglottids are released and shed through the feces.
- The eggs get released from the proglottid, & is ingested by IH. The hexacanth larva hatches and migrates to skeletal & cardiac muscles. Develop into cysticercus ovis.
- FH ingest the cysticercus, attach to mucosa of SI & mature. Release gravid proglottids.
Metacestode of Taenia ovis is called
Cysticercus ovis
What is the common name for the infection caused by Taenia ovis?
Sheep measles
