Discoverability

A

It is possible to determine what actions are possible and the current state of the device.

5
Q

Feedback

A

Communicating the results of an action.

There is full and continuous info about the results of actions and the current state of the product or service.

6
Q

Conceptual Model

A

A highly simplified explanation of how something works.

Leads to understanding and a feeling of control.

7
Q

Affordances

A

Relationship between a physical object and a person.

The proper affordances exist to make the desired actions possible.

8
Q

Signifiers

A

Any perceivable indicator that communicates appropriate behavior to a person.

Ensures discoverability and that the feedback is well-communicated and intelligible.

Q

Mappings

A

The relationship between the elements of 2 sets of things.

The relationship between controls and their actions follows the principles of good mapping.

Q

2 Types of Human Cognition

A
  1. Type 1 System = automatic (unconscious), effortless, fast thinking, associative, heuristic, gullible, can’t be turned off
  2. Type 2 System = voluntary (conscious), effortful, slow thinking, planning, logical, lazy, usually only partially on

Q

2 Types of Affect

A
  1. Valence = is it positive or negative?
  2. Arousal = how strong is this emotional state?

Q

Yerkes/Dodson Law

A

Bell curve for difficult tasks - performance increases as arousal increases up to the optimal point; performance is low with too less or too much arousal

As the level of arousal goes up for simple tasks, you get better at them.

Arousal increases performance for System 1 tasks, but only increases performance on System 2 tasks up to a threshold (optimal level)
