Don Norman’s 7 Principles of Design
- Discoverability
- Feedback
- Conceptual Model
- Affordances
- Signifiers
- Mappings
- Constraints
Discoverability
It is possible to determine what actions are possible and the current state of the device.
Feedback
Communicating the results of an action.
There is full and continuous info about the results of actions and the current state of the product or service.
Conceptual Model
A highly simplified explanation of how something works.
Leads to understanding and a feeling of control.
Affordances
Relationship between a physical object and a person.
The proper affordances exist to make the desired actions possible.
Signifiers
Any perceivable indicator that communicates appropriate behavior to a person.
Ensures discoverability and that the feedback is well-communicated and intelligible.
Mappings
The relationship between the elements of 2 sets of things.
The relationship between controls and their actions follows the principles of good mapping.
Constraints
Guides actions and eases interpretation.
2 Types of Human Cognition
- Type 1 System = automatic (unconscious), effortless, fast thinking, associative, heuristic, gullible, can’t be turned off
- Type 2 System = voluntary (conscious), effortful, slow thinking, planning, logical, lazy, usually only partially on
Affect
Current emotional state
2 Types of Affect
- Valence = is it positive or negative?
- Arousal = how strong is this emotional state?
Yerkes/Dodson Law
Bell curve for difficult tasks - performance increases as arousal increases up to the optimal point; performance is low with too less or too much arousal
As the level of arousal goes up for simple tasks, you get better at them.
Arousal increases performance for System 1 tasks, but only increases performance on System 2 tasks up to a threshold (optimal level)
Mental Model
Some internal representation in somebody’s brain of how the world works.
