Module 6 Flashcards
Think-Aloud Usability Evaluation (11 cards)
Empirical Evaluation
Gathering real data
Think-Aloud Usability Study
Observe users using your app and identify usability issues
Usability Study Steps
- Formulate goals of the study
- Design study protocol, tasks, materials, data collection, etc.
- Conduct study
- Analyze data to assess task performance and identify usability issues
Data Collection Methods
- Think aloud
- Screencast
- Questionnaires & interview questions to gather participant feedback
Questionnaire
Pre-defined questions, focused, less bias
Interview
More open-ended, longer responses
Critical Incident
Any action that does not lead to progress in performing the desired task.
When a critical incident occurs, write down:
- time
- what user was trying to do
- what user did
When reporting a critical incident during data analysis, write:
Problem Statement = summary of problem and effect on user (but not the solution)
User Goals = what was the user trying to do (broad goal)?
Immediate Intention = at the moment in time when problem occurred, what was the user trying to do?
Possible Causes = speculate on what might have led the user to take the action they did
At the end, group together similar critical incidents to form a ______
Usability Issue
Usability Study vs. Contextual Inquiry
Usability Study:
- Used for evaluation
- Generally conducted via observation
- Identification and analysis of critical incidents
- Intended to identify usability issues
Contextual Inquiry:
- Used primarily for needfinding
- Conducted more like a conversation
- Obtain data about users in their context
- Intended to help in the design phase of a project
