Module 4 - Renal labeling lab Flashcards
(39 cards)
What does the inferior vena cava do?
Carries deoxygenated blood from the lower body to the heart.
What is the function of the adrenal gland?
Produces hormones regulating stress, metabolism, etc.
What does the renal artery carry?
Carries oxygenated blood to the kidney for filtration.
What is the renal hilum?
Point where structures (artery, vein, ureter) enter/leave the kidney.
What does the renal vein do?
Carries filtered, deoxygenated blood away from the kidney.
What is the aorta?
Main artery distributing oxygenated blood from the heart to the body.
What is the function of the kidney?
Filters blood to remove waste, produces urine, regulates blood pressure and electrolytes.
What does the ureter do?
Tube that carries urine from the kidney to the urinary bladder.
What is the rectum’s function?
Stores feces before defecation.
What is the uterus?
Womb; organ where a fetus develops during pregnancy.
What does the urinary bladder do?
Stores urine before it is eliminated from the body.
What is the function of the urethra?
Tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body.
What are renal columns?
Extensions of cortical tissue separating the renal pyramids.
What is the renal sinus?
Space within the kidney containing the renal pelvis, calyces, vessels, and fat.
What is the renal cortex?
Outer region; contains glomeruli and involved in filtration.
What does the minor calyx do?
Collects urine from a renal pyramid.
What is the renal medulla?
Inner region; contains renal pyramids and involved in concentrating urine.
What is the renal capsule?
Protective outer fibrous layer surrounding the kidney.
What does the renal pelvis do?
Funnel-shaped structure that collects urine from the major calyces and leads to the ureter.
What does the major calyx do?
Collects urine from minor calyces and drains into the renal pelvis.
What does the afferent arteriole do?
Carries blood into the glomerulus.
What are glomerular capillaries?
Site of filtration where fluid and solutes are forced out of blood.
What does the efferent arteriole do?
Carries blood away from the glomerulus.
What is the glomerular capsule?
Collects the filtrate from the glomerulus.
