PRIMORDIAL LEVELS
Target population: General public
Objective: Prevent onset of illness
Means: Social media, fliers, radio station, TV, religious and community leaders, medical outreaches, government policies, billboard
Definition – educate them that monkey pox is viral disease caused by monkeypox virus
Epidemiology – the virus is more prevalent in central and western Africa
Mode of transmission – monkey pox is gotten through the bite of infected animas like monkeys, rats, squirrels or direct contact with fluids of infected animal/person
Signs and symptoms – educate them to look out for symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches, vesicular rash that starts from the face and progresses downward
Prevention – we educate them to avoid risk factors such as consumption of bushmeat, handling of wild animals, practice good hygiene especially after handling animals or their products
PRIMARY LEVEL (SPECIFIC PROPHYLAXIS)
Target population: General public with special attention to healthy individuals
Objective: Prevent onset of illness
Means: Social media, fliers, radio station, TV, religious and community leaders, medical outreaches etc
Method of prevention: (vaccines and chemoprophylaxis
THERE ARE NO VACCINES FOR MONKEY POX, however small pox vaccines may be protectivce
• Educate them to manage and prevent risk factors
• Quarantine and dispose of infected animals
• Avoid eating wild animals
• Ensure proper environmental sanitation
• Use personal protective equipment when caring for infected individuals
• Avoid travel to endemic zones
SECONDARY LEVEL EARLY DIAGNOSIS AND PROMPT TREATMENT
Target Population: Sick individuals
Objective: Early diagnosis & prompt treatment
Method of prevention: -Isolation of infected individuals
History
Clinical examination – fever, headache, myalgia, rash
Investigations – polymerase chain reaction, viral isolation and antigen detection from blood, skin lesions and respiratory droplets
Treatment
• Ensure adequate hydration
• Entipyretic for fever
• Antihistamine for itching
• Analgesics for pain
TERTIARY LEVEL
Target population: sick individuals
Objective: limit damage and prevent complications
Method
Prevent complications such as corneal ulceration, secondary bacterial infection, encephalitis
Management
• Intravenous fluid rehydration
• Anticonvulsants for seizures
• Antibiotics for secondary bacterial infections
• Vitamin A supplements
QUARTERNARY LEVEL
Target population – convalacents and recovering individuals
Objective – rehabilitataion/ prevent overmedicalization
Method – review by a specialist
Ensure patiens are treatment with appropriate dose specific medications
Eye glasses/ surgery
Social rehabilitation
Vocational rehabilitation
Nutritional support
