Flashcards in Mt Ch. 6-Lymphatic & Immune Deck (19):
1

what does the lymphatic system consist of?

lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, spleen, thymus gland, and tonsils

2

lymph

tissue fluid inside a lymphatic vessel

3

lymphatic system function

collect excess tissue fluid throughout the body and return it to the circulatory system; works with immune system to form groups of cells, tissues, organs, and molecules that are primary defense against pathogens

4

lacteals

lymph vessels around the small intestines

5

lymphatic vessels

extensive network of ducts throughout the body; one way pipes transporting lymph from tissues toward thoracic cavity

6

lymphatic capillaries

beginning of lymphatic vessels; located in tissues. tissue fluid enters here to begin trip back to circulatory system

7

valves

ensure that lymph only moves forward once the capillaries merge into larger lymphatic vessels

8

lymphatic ducts

right and thoracic; where those larger vessels drain into

9

right lymphatic duct

smaller, drains the right arm and right side of the head, neck, and chest. empties lymph into right subclavian vein

10

thoracic duct

larger, drains lymph from the rest of the body and empies into the left subclavian vein

11

immunoglobulins

antibodies secreted by B cells. all antibodies are considered this and help protect the body and surfaces from invasion of bacteria

12

lymphedema

edema appearing in the extremities due to obstruction of lymph flow through lymphatic vessels

13

splenomegaly

enlarged spleen

14

anaphylactic shock

life-threatening condition resulting in a severe allergic reaction. circulatory and respiratory problems occur

15

tonsillitis

inflammation of the tonsils

16

sarcoidosis

disease of unknown cause that forms fibrous lesions, commonly in lymph nodes, liver, skin, lungs, spleen, eyes, and small hand and foot bones

17

tonsillectomy

surgical removal of the tonsils

18

antihistamine

blocks effects of histamine released by body during allergic reaction
Zyrtec, Benadryl, cetirizine, diphenhydramine

19

corticosteroids

hormone produced by adrenal cortex that has very strong anti-inflammatory properties, useful in treating autoimmune diseases
prednisone, Solu-Medrol, methylprednisolone
