Multi Store Model Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is a model and what does it allow for?
- visual representation of how something works
- allows for predictions for human behaviour
Who invented the MSM?
Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968)
Multi store model overview?
- first model of memory
- 3 separate stores
- linear model
How does info pass from sensory register to STM?
If attention is focused on information it will go to STM
What are the three sensory stores?
- Iconic store (visual encoding)
- Echoic store (acoustic encoding)
- Haptic store (touch)
What can happen to info in STM if not rehearsed?
Info can decay from STM
What is displacement?
New info pushing out old info
How does info move between STM and LTM?
- moved from STM to LTM via maintenance rehearsal
- when needed info retrieved back to STM
Strength - Point
HM case study
Strength - Evidence
HM’s LTM severely damaged, would read some magazines without remembering it and couldn’t recall what he ate but his STM was intact and would perform well on immediate digit span tasks
Limitation - Point
MSM model too simplistic
Limitation - Evidence
MSM claims LTM is one unitary store but HM was unable to create episodic or sematic memories but could develop procedural memories like improving on the mirror drawing task
