Neoplasia: Tumor Characteristics Flashcards
(12 cards)
These are the changes in structural pattern of tumor cells.
- Increase in size
- Irregular shape
- Irregular pattern
- Anisocytosis
- Anisokaryosis
- Cell Crowding
These are the changes in the cytoplasm in tumor cells.
- Acidophilia by orangeophilia
- Excessive inclusion bodies
- Abnormal vacuolation
These are the changes in nucleus in tumor cells.
- Low N:C ratio
- Irregular size and shape
- Deep pigmentation (Hyperchromicity)
- Multinucleated (More mitosis)
- More nucleoli
- Increased distribution of chromatin
- Thick nuclear membrane
- Necrotic or degenerative changes
What are the microscopic features of malignancy?
- Pleomorphism
- Abnormal Nuclear Morphology
- Mitosis
- Loss of Polarity
- Necrosis
This is the variation in size and shape of a tumor.
Pleomosphism
This is the normal N:C ratio compared to a malignant cell.
- 1:4 is normal
- 1:1 indicated malignant celll
Why does abnormal nuclear stains more darkly than usual?
Hyperchromasia
These are the features of abnromal nuclear morphology.
- Large nucleus
- Large nucleoli
- Nuclear pleormophism
- Hyperchromasia
- Clumped chromatin
This refers to a higher rate of proliferation and are usually manifest in atypical and bizzare figures.
Mitosis and Mitotic Figures
This referes to the dsiturbed architecture with respect the basement membrane and usually appreciated in epithelia.
Loss of Polarity
This manifests due to ischemia mainly because of rapid growth of tumor that outgrows and suffocates the supply.
Necrosis; Necrotic Ischemia
This is the most common type of necrosis present in cancer.
Coagulative Necrosis
