NMR Flashcards
(4 cards)
What is NMR?
An analytical technique used primarily to determine the structure of organic compounds.
What information is used when deciphering’ NMR spectrum?
Chemical shifts: Indicate the environment of nuclei, helping identify the types of functional groups present by showing how shielded or deshielded atoms are.
Spin-Spin Coupling: Reveals how nearby nuclei interact, gives information about the number of adjacent atoms and their arrangement in the molecule.
Integration: Measures the relative area under the peaks, helps determine the number of protons associated with each signal.
Advantages of NMR
Provides more molecular structure information cf. UV or IR.
Information on functional groups, connectivity and stereochemistry.
It can be used to
fingerprint components within mixtures and quantitatively analyse drugs in formulations.
Disadvantages of NMR
Expensive spectrometers
Highly trained staff are needed to operate spectrometers.
The analysis technique is insensitive, so > 5 mg is required for 1H NMR
