How can eye contact be used?
When you keep eye contact with the person you are talking to it indicates that you are focused and paying attention. Actually listening to what the person has to say.
How can facial expressions be used?
Can help make a person feel more comfortable and relaxed.
How can gestures be used?
Can reinforce what is being communicated and be used as a visual aid to help understanding.
How can positioning be used?
Can make an individual feel more comfortable.
How can positive body language be used?
Good, straight posture indicates leadership and confidence. It tells the audience that you are in control. It conveys the message that you have confidence in your competence.
How can a sense of humour be used?
Trying to make individuals laugh/ smile can help make them feel more relaxed or laughing if a patient makes a joke can help increase their self - esteem.
Importance of eye contact?
Shows that the service provider is paying attention. Helps service providers work out how a service user is feeling.
Importance of facial expressions.
Facial expressions often reveal feelings. Service providers have to learn how to read facial expressions so they can respond appropriately.
Importance of Positioning - space.
Making sure that the area has enough space for service user and provider to be comfortable. Allows for privacy.
Importance of Positioning - height.
Height should not be used to make a service user uncomfortable, intimidated, overwhelmed or self - conscious.
Importance of Positioning - personal space.
Too close = intimidating and uncomfortable
Too far away = uninterested
Importance of Positive Body Language.
Crossed arms and legs = closed defensive body language.
Uncrossed arms and legs = open body language.
Importance of sense of humour.
Humour can reduce tension and help someone feel at ease. Can create a relaxed atmosphere and reduce anxiety and stress.
