what is a norm?
specific rules or socially accepted standards that govern our behaviour. these can be formal (written rules such as the law) or informal (unwritten rules)
what are values?
general principles, beliefs or guidelines about how we should live our lives. they reflect a persons sense of right and wrong
what are mores?
a basic set of norms that society see as vital for maintaining standards of decency
examples of mores
murder, cannibalism, incest
what is a moral code
a set of established rules or guidelines that a person or group uses to determine what is right and wrong, and to guide their behavior
what is criminal?
a person who has committed a crime or has been legally convicted of a crime. involves men’s rea and actus rea
what is the social definition of crime?
an act defined by society’s reactions and beliefs, rather than solely by written laws
what is deviancy?
behaviour that gives against social norms and values. odd behaviour, bad behaviour and admired behaviour.
what is a sanction
penalty or punishment, or a restriction imposed on an individual, group, or country,
what is an informal sanction
a rule not formally written down
what is a formal sanction
legally recognized and officially enforced punishment or reward for breaking or adhering to a rule or law
example of formal sanction
fines, cautions (by police) prison

the idea that criminal behavior and deviance are not naturally determined but rather are socially built/made by society
