A worker who interprets what a doctor has said to a patient and vice versa.

- To make sure all patients get equal care - To make sure a patient understands their proper diagnosis

What is communicative autonomy?
The ability of each party in an encounter to be responsible for and in control of their own communication - They understand what is going on and being said, which allows us to make informed decisions - This gives us the ability to express ourselves as we wish.

- Communicative autonomy is not possible - Informed decisions cannot be made - equal healthcare is not achieved

What is informed consent?
-The process in which a health care provider educates a patient about the risks, benefits, and alternatives of a procedure. -The patient must be competent to make a voluntary decision about whether to undergo the procedure or intervention. -Informed consent is both an ethical and legal obligation of medical practitioners in the US and originates from The Patient’s right to direct what happens to their body.

- In-house interpreters - Freelance interpreters -Dual-role interpreters -Volunteer interpreters

in-house interpreters staff interpreters
-Many hospitals and health centers employ in-house or staff interpreters. - Staff interpreters are employees, as opposed to independent contractors. - Staff interpreters may have stable schedules, or work variable hours. Depending on their full-time or part-time status. - They may have employee benefits, such as health insurance, paid time off, etc.

-The majority of interpreters work as freelance interpreters (also called self-employed, contract interpreter or independent contractor). -Freelancers own their own business and can contract with as many agencies as they wish, such as large language service companies, small local agencies, or direct with hospitals. -Freelancers do not receive benefits and are normally paid hourly.

dual-role interpreters
-Dual role interpreters (bilingual staff) are healthcare employees whose main role is not as an interpreter, for example a medical assistant or an ultrasound technician. - These employees might be asked to interpret, in addition to their main role.

volunteer interpreters
Most volunteer interpreters are not paid, and they may work on a regular basis for a particular clinic or organization. -Most are not trained or qualified to interpret and for this reason, most large hospitals or organizations no longer use volunteer interpreters.

What is impartiality?
Treating all parties in an encounter equally and not being biased.

- They are able to get the proper treatment as every other patient. -Patients are able to make their own opinion on things, without having anyone persuade them - The patient is able to be in charge of their own communication.

What challenges may an interpreter face while trying to uphold this Impartiality?
-The Interpreter may get emotional or give off bad body language. - For some it can be challenging to keep their opinions to themselves.

What does an absence of impartiality look like?
- The patient may not get the adequate care. - Patient's illness may get worse - Patient may feel judged or feel uncomfortable
