RCA Head and Neck Lecture 4 Muscle and Bone Flashcards
(24 cards)
whats the extent of the larnyx
C3-C6
hyoid to cricoid
what are the key cartilages of the larynx
cricoid, thyroid, 2 arytenoids, epiglottis
where does the upper boarder of the quadrangular membrane run between and what does it form
it runs from the epiglottis to the arytenoid cartilages
This upper part is the aryepiglottic fold forming the laryngeal opening
what does the inferior border of the quadrangular membrane form
inferior border forms the vestibular ligament, which once covered by mucous membranes forms the vestibular folds
whats the gap between the vocal cord called
the rima glottidis
where does the upper edge of the cricothyroid membrane run and whats it form
runs between the cricoid and the thyroid cartilages, and to the arytenoids
the upper edge forms the vocal fold by going from the thyroid to arytenoids
what forms the vocal folds
the cricothyroid membrane running from the thyroid cartilage to the arytenoid cartilage , with mucous membrane covering
what is the laryngeal inlet
the space between the aryepiglottic folds
what is the vestibule
space from the inlet to the vestibular folds
what is the ventricle
space between the vestibular and vocal folds
what is the saccule
a pouch of mucous membrane between vestibular folds and laryngeal lamina
what is the rima glottis
space between the vocal folds
whats the piriform recess
space between the quadrangular membrane and the lamina of the thyroid cartilage
what nerves innervate the internal laryngeal muscles
all are innervated by the recurrent laryngeal nerve, except for the cricothyroid muscle which is innervated by the external laryngeal nerve
whats the innervation and function of the cricothyroid muscle
stretches and tenses the vocal cords
innervated by the external laryngeal nerve
whats the innervation and function of the thyro-arytenoid muscle
recurrent laryngeal nerve and it relaxes the vocal folds
whats the innervation and function of the lateral crico-arytenoid muscles
recurrent laryngeal nerve is its innervation and it adducts the vocal folds
whats the innervation and function of the transverse and oblique arytenoid muscles
these draw the arytenoid cartilages together and aid in vocal cord adduction
innervated by the recurrent laryngeal nerve
describe the relations of the transverse arytenoid muscles, the oblique arytenoid muscles and the aryepiglottic muscle
oblique is the more superficial of the arytenoid muscles, and the oblique arytenoids are continuous with the aryepiglottic muscles
whats the function and innervation of the aryepiglottic muscles
the aryepiglottic muscle along with the arytenoid muscles and epiglottis itself act as a sphincter narrowing the laryngeal inlet, preventing swallowed material from entering inside.
whats the function and innervation of the posterior crico-arytenoid muscles
they abduct the vocal cords, and innervated by the recurrent laryngeal nerve
whats the function of the mylohyoid
elevates the hyoid, floor of the mouth and tongue.
if the hyoid is fixed it will depress the mandible
function of the geniohyoid
elevate the hyoid, depress the mandible
