RCA Head and Neck Lecture 2 Blood Vessels and fascia Flashcards
(22 cards)
whats the external jugular vein external to compared to the internal jugular vein
the sternocleidomastoid muscle
where does the external jugular vein begin and whats it a union of
it begins at near the angle of the mandible by the union of the retromandibular vein and posterior auricular vein
whats the path of the external jugular vein
it crosses the sternomastoid superficially then peirces the cervical fascia before terminating in the subclavian vein
what forms the brachiocephalic vein
the subclavian (which the EJV fed into) and the IJV
what are the names of the fascia in the neck
investing layer, pretracheal, prevertebral, carotid sheath
what does the investing layer of fascia contain
it lies between the layers of superficial fascia in the neck and the muscles, surrounding all structures in the neck
the investing layer splits to contain the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles
what does the pretracheal layer of fascia contain
its in the anterior aspect of the neck, it lies deep to the infrahyoid muscles but contains thyroid, trachea and oesophagus
what does the prevertebral fascia contain
it runs from the skull to T3 containing the vertebral column and its muscles
where does the prevertebral fascia run to and from
from the base of the skull to the level of T3
where does the carotid sheath extend to and fro
from the base of the skull to the root of the neck
what does the carotid sheath contain
common and internal carotid arteries, internal jugular vein vagus nerve, C1-C3 (the ansa cervicalis from the cervical plexus)
whats the naming convention for lymph vessels of the face and anterior forehead
they are named according to the vessels of the same area they follow
where do the lymph nodes of the face and anterior forehead drain
the submandibular lymph nodes
where do the lymph nodes of the lateral face drain
into parotid nodes
where do lymph nodes of central part of chin and lower lip drain
into submental nodes
all lymph from the head and neck eventually drain to where
deep cervical lymph nodes
what do all the deep cervical lymph nodes do
form a chain along the internal jugular vein
The major lymph ducts in the head and neck are the
right and left jugular trunks
what do the right and left jugular trunks drain from
the deep cervical nodes
where does the right jugular trunk drain
the right lymphatic duct
where does the left jugular trunk drain
the thoracic duct
where do the right lymphatic ducts and the thoracic ducts join into the venous drainage
at the junction of the internal jugular and subclavian veins
