RCA lecture 1 blood vessels Flashcards
(21 cards)
what are the branches of the facial nerve
temporal, zygomatic, buccal, mandibular and cervical
what passes through the parotid gland
the facial nerve
whats the blood supply and drainage of the parotid gland
ECA supplies it, retromandibular vein drains it
what are the medial branches of the ECA
ascending pharyngeal artery
what are the anterior branches of the ECA
superior thyroid, lingual, facial
what are the posterior branches of the ECA
occipital and posterior auricular
what are the terminal branches of the ECA
maxillary and superficial temporal
tell me about the path the facial nerve takes
it ascends deep to the submandibular gland then winds around the inferior boarder of the mandible, anterior to the masseter, then follows a tortuos corse upwards and medially to the angle of the eye
whats the facial artery supply
to the lips and the side of the nose
tell me about the origin of the superficial temporal artery and its location
its the smaller of the two terminal branches of the ECA. it emerges anterior to the ear
what does the superficial temporal artery supply
the temporal area of skin
whats special about the opthalmic artery
its the only facial artery that stems from the ICA
what are the branches of the opthalamic artery
the supraorbital and supratrochlear arteries
whats the path of the opthalmic artery and whats it supply
it comes from the ICA goes through the optic foramen with the optic nerve to the orbit. then goes through the supraorbital foramen to supply the forehead and scalp
whats the major venous drainage of the face
the facial vein
whats the path of the facial vein
begins at the medial angle of the eye (canthus), runs posterior to the facial artery, travels down and drains to IJV at the inferior margin of the mandible
what does the facial vein communicate with at the medial canthus
the opthalmic vein and the pterygoid plexus
whats the danger area
the area around the nose that is susceptible to having haematognous spread of infection as the facial veins communicate the opthalmic which goes to cavernous sinus, so easy infection spread.
whats the pterygoid plexus
a network of veins around the lateral pterygoid muscle
how do the opthalmic veins get to the cavernous sinus
through the superior orbital fissure
how does the pterygoid plexus communicate with the cavernous sinus
via small emissary veins that pass through the foramen ovale
