reliability Flashcards
reliability means
consistent, if researchers replicate should get similar results
external vs internal reliability
external - how consistent is it when repeated at a diff time w diff ppl for example
internal - extent that diff parts of a measure are consistent within itself
how to asses internal reliability
split half method
- asses things that test one variable w multiple questions
- split the test into 2 parts
- ppt complete both parts
- test the strength of correlation bet the 2 parts of the measure
- a strong correlation indicates internal reliability
assessing external reliability
repeat the study using same procedures at diff times and test the correlations bet 2 versions
inter rater reliability
2 or more observers record beh during same obs using same beh categories, then test correlation using spearmans rho, correlation of 8.0 or more
how to improve reliability of an observation
- improving traininng of observer to improve their accuracy of allocating beh to correct beh cat
- pilot studies can identify vauge beh categoriest which can then be operationalised
how to improve reliability
- use structured interviews over unstructured so intervoew had a script so standardised procedures so each person has sim experience and results can be reliabily compared
improving reliability of questionaires
use closed questions ot reduce the range of possible responses and if there is an existing questionaire that measures what you want then use that instead of creating a new test
improving reliability of experiment
use standardised procedutre so they have same experience
environmentla cond the same
use established tests instead of creating new ones
