What are the body cavities?
Thorax, abdomen and pelvis
What are the 2 cavities the thorax is divided into?
The pleural cavities

What divides the pleural cavities?
The mediastinum
What are the 2 types of serous membrane?
Peritoneum and pleura
What does the peritoneum line?
The abdomen and the pelvis
What does the pleura line?
The thorax
What are the 2 layers of the pleura?
Visceral pleura
Parietal pleura
What is the parietal pleura?
The outer layer, lines the walls
What is the visceral pleura?
The inner layer, lines the organs
What is the cavity that is formed between these layers?
The pleural cavity
What is the function of the pleural membrane?
Creates a vacuum that sticks the 2 pleural layers together
What are conchae?
Fine scroll s of bone that provide a large SA
What is olfaction?
Smelling
What are the conchae lined with?
Ciliated mucous epithelium
What is the pharynx?
The connection between the nasal/oral cavities and the larynx
What are the 2 parts of the Pharynx?
The nasopharynx - dorsal
The oropharynx - ventral
What is the larynx?
The connection between the pharynx and the trachea
A series of pieces of cartilage
What is the function of the larynx?
To regulate air entry into the trachea
To produce sounds - vocal ligaments
What is the epiglottis?
The most rostral portion of the larynx
A piece of elastic cartilage
Where is the trachea located?
Ventrally to (under) the oesophagus
What is the name of the muscle that connects the ends of the C in the trachea?
The trachealis muscle
What is the trachea lined with?
Ciliated mucous pseudostratified epithelium
Where are the lungs located?
In the thoracic cavity
Which lung is bigger?
Right cos no heart there
