• place slide onto stage and use clips to keep in place
• select lowest objective lens
• position objective lens so it almost touched microscope slide
  = slowly turn focusing dial
• look down through eyepiece and turn focusing dial
  = increases distance between objective lens and the slide
• do until cells come into focus
• use fine focusing disk to bring cells into clear focus
