How to vaccinations work

A
  • introduce small quantities of dead or inactive forms of pathogen into body
  • as pathogen is dead or inactive it can’t lead to disease in the patient
  • wbc stimulated to produce antibodies against dead pathogen
  • at same time wbc divides by mitosis
    = produce lots of copies of itself
    = copies of wbc stay in blood for decades
    = if same pathogen renter body again wbc can produce correct antibodies quickly
    = prevent infection

Describe herd immunity

A

If enough people are vaccinated this also protects unvaccinated people
= means unvaccinated person can’t catch disease as no one around them can pass the pathogen on
