Sac B5 part 2 Flashcards
(5 cards)
Biomedical + (Funding brings about improvements in technology + research)
Without BMH -> no x-rays, surgery & antibiotics + relatively no knowledge about technology and how to diagnose and treat disease and illness
Biomedical + (Improves quality of life + HALE)
Many chronic conditions can be managed with surgery, medication, therapy -> reducing pain + suffering
Biomedical + (It extends life expectancy)
Many common causes of death in the past eg infectious diseases can now be treated or cured -> Extending LE
Biomedical - (Not every condition can be treated)
Those relying on the biomedical approach to restore optimal h & w -> experience conditions that cannot be cured or treated effectively. These conditions can be prevented through behaviour changes but that is not the focus of biomedical. Cancer is an example of a condition that has treatments avaliable but in many cases no cure.
Biomedical - (Relies professional health workers + technology = costly)
Because individuals are the focus of this approach -> People with specialist knowledge about disease and treatment are required to adequately treat patient.
As knowledge and technology has developed -> cost of training and treatment has increased. Some machines are required for diagnosis e.g. MRI machines + Treatment e.g. Robot surgery systems
This can cost millions + only treat a small number of patients each day
