Science 3.1 Flashcards
(18 cards)
emulsion define
2 or more liquids that dont normally mix together r forced to mix together. one liquid is the base and the other liquid is spread out into tiny particles and dispersed throughout the mixture.
solution
a clear mixture with a solute dissolved in a solvent
pure substance
Something that has only one type of substance
sediment
substance that settles at bottom of liquid
colloid
cloudy mixture where particles cannot dissolve and are too small to settle down, so they just stay spread throughout a liquid
how to know i smth is a colloid
cloudly or slightly opaque. most colloids are creamier or thicker than water. particles just spread out in mixture and dont settle at the bottom.
Suspension define
Mixture of 2 subtances where a solid is spread throughout but undissoved in a liquid. The solid will then settle down, becoming a sediment.
Which of these are mixtures: tea, soft drink, table salt, soap, olive oil.
tea, soft drink, olive oil, soap
What substances are found in olive oil
pigment, vitamins
what substances are found in soap
h2O, glycerin
What particles are found in soft drinks?
h2O molecules, CO(2) also known as carbon dioxide molecules
what particles are found in tea?
sugar, milk
identify types of mixtures that would form a sediment
mud and water, orange juice with pulp, flour and water
what are the substnaces involved in a suspension?
substances: solid, liquid
What is the appearance of a suspension mixture when light shines on it
cloudy
does a suspension mixture separate on standing (naturally separate
yes, slowly
example of a suspension
mud in water
how does a suspension look like?
a cloudy liquid
