Types of deception

A
  1. Partner-focused: to avoid hurting other, help partner maintain esteem, protect partner’s relationship w/ 3rd party. (soc polite and beneficial)- most forgivable.
  2. Self-focused: enhance/ protect self-image, shield self from anger, etc. (more serious)
  3. Relationship-focused: limit relational harm by avoiding conflict (beneficial and destructive)

Detecting Deception

  • hesitations, etc. indicate gen anxiety
  • most reliable: compare normal vs current behavior (Sheldon’s ticks)

Variables that influence deception

A

Truth bias: expect others to be honest, so enter convos w/out suspicion & don’t look for deceptive behavior. Strong w relationships- by Receiver

Behavioral control: control nervous behaviors–by Senders (Sheldon)

Behavioral familiarity: know partner’s communication, so can’t lie about it–by Receiver

Informational familiarity: know stuff about partner, so can’t lie about it–by Receiver
