Moshe said to Pharaoh
pride yourself over me
FOR WHEN SHOULD I daven for you and for your servants
and for your nation to remove the frogs from your houses, only in the nile they should remain
for when shall i pray
that which I will pray for you today about getting rid of the frogs, for when do you
want the frogs to be gotten rid of, and you will see if I keep my
word, for the set time you will set for me, had it said “when shall I
pray?” It would have meant when should I (Moshe) pray (for the
frogs to be gone) (should Moshe pray now, in a few hours,
tomorrow?) Now it says “for when” I (Moshe) today will pray for
you that they frogs be cut off, to the time you (Pharaoh) set for
me, you say to me for which day do you want them to be
removed
Rashi Question
What does the pasok say לְמ ָ ת ַ֣ י “to when”
instead of saying “when”?
Rashi Answer
The pasok is telling us that Moshe asked
Pharaoh exactly what time do you want this prayer to be in place,
Moshe is going to daven now to hashem to take away the frogs
but its up to pharaoh when he exactly want the frogs gone. Why
does Moshe do this? To show Pharaoh how much power Moshe and Hashem has. Also, so make sure that Pharaoh doesn’t think
its a coincidence that the frogs went away right after Moshe
prayed, so Moshe makes Pharaoh pick an exact time so Pharaoh
knows that it was actually Moshe and Hashem they removed the
frogs.
