Pasuk Beis: לֹ֣א יִֽהְיֶ֣ה־לְךָ֩ אֱלֹהִ֨ים אֲחֵרִ֜ים עַל־פָּנַ֗י:
There shall not be other Gds in my Face
Rashi Question
what does other gods mean?
אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים.
“other gods”
שֶׁאֵינָן אֱלוֹהוּת
that they are not divine
אֶלָּא אֲחֵרִים עֲשָׂאוּם אֱלֹהִים עֲלֵיהֶם,
Rather others (ppl) made them as gods over them
וְלֹא יִתָּכֵן לְפָרֵשׁ אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים זוּלָתִי,
it is not correct to explain “other gods besides me”
שֶׁגְּנַאי הוא כְּלַפֵּי מַעְלָה
For that is insulting torwards HaShem
לִקְרֹאותָם אֱלוֹהוּת אֶצְלוֹ
to call them gods next to HIM
What is teh first explanation to “Other gods”
Idols aren’t other gods, they are “gods” made by other
דָּבָר אַחֵר אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים
Another explanation for “other gods”
שֶׁהֵם אֲחֵרִים לְעוֹבְדֵיהֶם
that they are “strangers” to those who worship them
צוֹעֲקִים אֲלֵיהֶם
They (worshippers) cry out to them (gods)
וְאֵינָן עוֹנִין אוֹתָם
and they (gods) don’t answer them
וְדוֹמֶה כְּאִלּוּ הוּא אַחֵר
and it is as if the idols are strangers
שֶׁאֵינוֹ מַכִּירוֹ מֵעוֹלָם:
who has never known him
עַל־פָּנַי.

כָּל זְמַן שֶׁאֲנִי קַיָּם
all times that I AM in existence
שֶׁלֹּא תֹאמַר
that you should not say
לֹא נִצְטַוּוּ עַל עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה אֶלָּא אוֹתוֹ הַדּוֹר
they were only commanded not to serve Avodah Zara and for that gen alone
לֹ֣א תַֽעֲשֶׂה־לְּךָ֣ פֶ֣סֶל | וְכָל־תְּמוּנָ֡ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּשָּׁמַ֣יִם | מִמַּ֡עַל וַֽאֲשֶׁר֩ בָּאָ֨רֶץ מִתַּ֜חַת וַֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּמַּ֣יִם | מִתַּ֣חַת לָאָ֗רֶץ:
You shall not make for yourself an idol or any image likeness which is in the heavens above, which is on the earth below, or which is in the water beneath the earth.
