What is Sjogren’s syndrome?
An autoimmune condition affecting the exocrine glands, causing dry mucous membranes
Sjogren’s syndrome primarily impacts salivary and lacrimal glands.
What are the symptoms of Sjogren’s syndrome?
Dry eyes, dry mouth, dry vagina
These symptoms are due to reduced secretion from exocrine glands.
What is the management for Sjogren’s syndrome?
Artificial tears, artificial saliva, vaginal lubricants, hydroxychloroquine
Management focuses on alleviating symptoms and may include medications to reduce inflammation.
What antibodies is Sjogren’s syndrome associated with?
Anti-Ro and Anti-La
These antibodies are often tested for in patients suspected of having Sjogren’s syndrome.
What is the difference between primary and secondary Sjogren’s syndrome?
Primary appears on its own; secondary is associated with rheumatoid arthritis or SLE
SLE refers to systemic lupus erythematosus.
What test can be used to help diagnose Sjogren’s syndrome?
Schirmer’s test
A positive result is indicated by anything below 10mm.
What are the complications of Sjogren’s syndrome?
Complications include:
* Eye - corneal ulcers, infection, conjunctivitis
* Mouth - oral candidiasis, dental cavities
* Vagina - candidiasis, sexual dysfunction
These complications arise due to prolonged dryness and inflammation.
