What are the 4 forms of guidance
Verbal, visual, manual, mechanical
What is verbal guidance
A description or explanation on how to perform a skill by a significant other
What are advantages of verbal guidance
Reinforce good movements and identify errors
Can be used to motivate performer and is readily available
What are disadvantages of verbal guidance
Can lead to info overload
If guidance is inacurate, skills will be hindered
What is visual guidance
Demonstrations to help a learner by highlighting key points and reinforce them by cueing
What are advantages of visual guidance
Easy to create a mental picture
Skills can be seen at different stages
Encourages observational learning
What are disadvantages of visual guidance
If demo is incorrect, bad habits may form
Coach may not be able to present an accurate demo
visual representation may be unclear or too quick
What is manual guidance
Physically directing the performer into the correct position to perform a skill
What is mechanical guidance
Use of equipment to help support the learning of a skill
What are advantages of manual and mechanical guidance
Helps with confidence and safety in dangerous situations
Can give kinaesthetic feel
Can isolate an action within a skill
What are disadvantages of manual and mechanical guidance
Can be over restrictive and lead to lack of feedback
Can lead to false kinaesthesis
Negatively motivate and cause negative transfer
May become over reliant
