Skills ac - social facilitation and inhibition Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is social facilitation
The positive influence of others, who may be watching or competing on sports performance
What is social inhibition
The negative influence of others, who may be watching or competing on sports performance
What factors were identified by Zajonc (1965) that affect performance
- Presence of audience increases arousal
- Increased arousal leads to dominant response
- If DR is correct (simple skill or expert performer) performance is improved
- If DR is incorrect (complex skill or novice performer) performance declined
What is evaluation apprehension
Arousal increases as performer perceives the audience to be assessing them
What are the 5 main factors of social facilitation and inhibition
- Home vs away
- Personality
- Experience
- Type of skill
- Other influences
What are the effects of home vs away
Teams more often win at home due to nature of audience. May also be harder to win at home due to increased pressure
What are the effects of personality as a factor of SF/SI
Type B (low anxiety) perform better than type A in audience, and extroverts perform better than introverts
What are the effects of experience as a factor of SF/SI
If a performer has previously failed in front of an audience they may fail again. Elite performers perform better due to correct DR. Anxiety increases for cognitive learners
What are the effects of type of skill as a factor of SF/SI
Gross skills are helped by high arousal/audience. Fine/complex skills are hindered by audience
What are the effects of other influences as a factor of SF/SI
Nature of the crowd, if hostile may increase anxiety. Proximity, a close audience may make a performer feel threatened
What are strategies to minimise social inhibition
Selectively attend to block distractions
Somatic relaxation
SMART goal setting
Practice in front of an audience
Positive self talk
