What are the 4 theories of aggression
Instinct theory
Frustration-aggression hypothesis
SLT
Aggressive cue hypothesis
What is aggression
Intent to harm outside the rules of the sport
What is assertion
Forceful behaviour that is controlled within the rules
What is the Instinct theory
Aggression is innate, and is developed animalistically as a survival instinct
What are key issues of the instinct theory
Not all humans are aggressive
Many can control their aggressive tendancies
What is the frustration aggression hypothesis
Blocked goals (poor performance, perceived unfairness) causes frustration and increase arousal, which causes aggression to be exerted in an attempt to achieve catharsis, which if not successful, can lead to further aggression and punishment
What are key issues of the frustration aggression hypothesis
Not everyone behaves like this in frustrating circumstances
Aggression is not satisfying to everyone
What is the SLT of aggression
Aggression is vicariously learnt and reinforced through observation and imitation of role models. Bandura bobo doll
What are key issues with SLT
May not copy role model behaviour
Sense of independence may lead to role model being ignored
What is aggressive cue hypothesis
Certain environmental stimuli must be present to cause frustration and anger, which elicit a readiness for aggression
What are key issues with aggressive cue hypothesis
Same cue can elicit different responses at different times
Same cue can elicit different responses for different people
What are some social explanations for aggression and violence
Violent crimes are learned by citizens
Society accepts violence in sport
Aggression may lead to greater success in such a high pressure business
Demands of society for sport to be a spectacle
