Skills ac - transfer of skills Flashcards
(12 cards)
Define transfer
The influencing of learning and/or performance of another skill
What are the 5 forms of transfer
Proactive, retroactive, positive, negative, bilateral
What is proactive transfer
A previously learned skill affects the learning or performance of a new skill
What is retroactive transfer
The learning of a new skill affects the learning or performance of a previously learned skill
What is positive transfer
Learning or performance of one skill helps that of another
What is negative transfer
Learning or performance of one skill hinders that of another
What is bilateral transfer
The transfer of learning from one limb to another
When does positive transfer occur
When two skills are learnt similarly, and one is already mastered
How can positive transfer be encouraged
Ensure similarities of the skills are understood
Make sure basics of the first skill are well learned
Clear demonstrations
Ensure fundamental motor skills are learnt
When does negative transfer occur
When a stimulus common to both skills requires different responses for each
How can negative transfer be reduced
Ensure differences between the two are understood
Make practice similar to match situations, to ensure a larger generalised motor programme
What are the two main ways in which bilateral transfer can occur
1 . Cognitive aspects - understanding what is required
2 . Transfer of motor programme - pattern learned by one limb is used subconsciously in the other
