A

More success = more role models = more ppl inspired = increase in participation in sport = greater/wider talent pool = more elites athletes = more success then repeats in a cycle

1936 BERLIN OLYMPICS (NAZI GERMANY)

  • Adolf Hitler used the games to promote ideology of Aryan racial superiority
  • Event staged to show Germany’s discipline, power and organisation
  • Stadiums, broadcast filled with Nazi symbols and propaganda
  • African American athlete Jesse Owen’s won 4 gold medals, undermining the racist msg

1980 MOSCOW OLYMPICS: - Over 60 countries, led by USA, boycotted the games to protest the Soviet Unions invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 - In retaliation USSR and other eastern bloc nations boycotted 1984 olympics in Los Angeles

1968 Mexico City Olympics (Black powr salute): - American sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised black gloved fists during medal ceremony - protest was again racial discrimination and injustice in USA - both athletes receive major backlash and were expelled from the games but their actions were iconic

PING PONG DIPLOMACY (1971) - table tennis exchange between china and USA helped open diplomatic relations - paved way for US president Hixon historic visit to china 1972 - sport was used as soft power tool to ease political tension between Cold War rivals

1995 SOUTH AFRICA RUGBY WORLD CUP: - hosted and won by so it h active just after end of apartheid - Nelson Mandela wore springbok jersey (symbol of white South African rugby) to promote unity - event helped heal racial divides and build a post apartheid national identity
