Operation

A

Incorporates FF Skill 4 (ship standpipe) and FF Skill 5 (unship standpipe)

  • locate hydrant (call hydrant)
  • use hydrant bar to loosen and open hydrant lid
  • check hydrant pit is clear (call pit clear)
  • check the disc, collar and washer and then ship standpipe.
  • rotate tightening handles clockwise to tighten standpipe to hydrant
  • turn T-handle clockwise to flush hydrant until water runs clear, then turn off by turning anti-clockwise and connect hoseline.
  • call ‘water on!’
  • turn T-handle clockwise to discharge water from the outlet.
  • at conclusion of operations, call ‘water off’ and then turn T-handle anti-clockwise to stop the supply of water from the outlet.
  • release pressure in hoseline by opening the inlet at the pump.
  • disconnect hose from standpipe.
  • unship standpipe by turning tightening handles anti-clockwise.
  • check the disc, collar and washer after removing from the hydrant pit.

Safety
- never put your head over the spindle when shipping/unshipping the standpipe or turning the T-handle.
- wear appropriate PPE and ensure your visor is down when shipping the standpipe.
- look for hazards in hydrant pits when shipping standpipes (needles, spiders/ants).
