Sulfonylureas Flashcards
(7 cards)
Short acting sulfonylureas
Gliclazide
Glipizide
Tolbutamide
Long acting Sulfonylureas
Glibenclamide
Glimepiride
Mechanism of action of sulfonylureas
Increased insulin secretion and therefore are only effective if there is any residual beta cell pancreatic activity
Side effects of sulfoylureas
Hypoglycemia(more frequent with long acting)
Abdominal pain
Diarrhoea
CI and cautions of sulfonylureas
CI- Ketoacidosis
C- Weight gain, elderly, G6PD deficiency
Sulfonylureas and renal impairment
Use with caution in mild-severe impairment. Use at lowest effective dose and avoid if possible in severe
Sulfonylureas in the elderly
May be unsuitable (especially long acting) due to the risk of persistent hypoglycaemia
