Roleplay with me forward chaining, washing hands. Start with, prompt me to turn on water, and through the steps. When they turn on water themselves you reinforce and prompt through the rest. Start with the 1st step and prompt everything else and so on. Might start with, turn water on.

Backward Chaining

Prompt everything then teach the last step. Go through it again, prompt everything and teach the second to last step and last step. Etc.

Total Chaining

The child can do most of the steps but not steps 3 or 5. So you would let them do the whole thing and help the child do steps 3/5.
