Topic 2 C Flashcards
(16 cards)
What happens when a person has coronary heart desease
The arteries become narrow because of a build up of fatty deposits
Reduces blood flow and leads to lack of oxygen for the heart
What are stents for
opening arteries so blood can pass through
What happens when you have to much cholesterol
Coronary heart desease
What do statins do
Drugs that Reduce cholesterol in blood
Advantages of statins
Reducing cholesterol means it reduces risk of strokes, coronary heart desease and heart attacks
Can increase amount of beneficial cholesterol
Disadvantages of statins
Long term drug to be taken regularly. You could forget them
Negative side effects like kidney failure
Effect isn’t instant
Advantage of artifical heart
Less likely to be rejected by body as donor heart
Disadvantage of artifical heart
Surgery can lead to bleeding and infection
Don’t work as well as natural ones
Blood clotes and stokes
What is a less drastic procedure than heart transplant
Valve transplant
Two types of heart valve disease
Leaky valve
Allows backflow of blood so heart has to do more work to keep the blood circulating
Valves don’t open properly
Obstruct blood flow so greater force is required to push blood through body
Both put strain on the heart
Ways to treat heart failure
Organ transplant
Artificial heart
Disadvantages of stents
Drugs must be taken to stop blood clotting
Overtime the stent can cause irritation leading to the artery beginning to narrow again
How to treat coronary heart disease
Stents or statins
Using drugs for heart disease advantages and Disadvantages
Cheep and don’t require surgery
Side effects and patient has to remember to take them
Us eof mechanical devices for heart disease advantages and Disadvantages
Don’t need donor and won’t be rejected
Requires a power supply and might need changing
Use of transplants for heart disease advantages and Disadvantages
Organ won’t wear down and will function like the one replaced
Requires suitable donor and drugs
