Topic 4 B Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is respiration
Process of transferring energy from glucose
What is metabolism
All the chemical reactions in an organism
Aerobic respiration equation
Glucose + oxygen ——- co2 + water
What is aerobic respiration
Respiration using oxygen
Happens in mitochondria
Anaerobic respiration equation in animals
Glucose——– lactic acid
What is anaerobic respiration
Respiration without oxygen
Only useful in emergencys
What is oxygen debt
Amount of extra oxygen your body needs to react with the build up of lactic acid and remove it from cells
Why do your pulse and breathing rate remain high after you stop exercise
There are high levels of lactic acid and co2 in body
What is fermentation
Anaerobic respiration in yeast cells
Equation for anaerobic respiration in plants
Glucose ——- co² + ethanol
Examples of metabolic reactions
Making lipids and amino acids
Coverting glucose into starch and cellulose( for plants) and glycogen( for animals)
Breaking down excess proteins to form urea to be peed out
Lactic acid
By product of anaerobic respiration
Toxic and causes muscle fatigue and pain when it builds up
Rate of respiration increases during exercise because
Heart rate increases so more blood is pumped to muscles
Breathing rate and breath volume increases so rate of gass exchange in the lungs also increases
Blood vessels dilate more so more blood reaches the muscles
Energy is needed for
Growth
Contracting muscles
Homeostasis
