Traumatic Brain Injury Flashcards
(27 cards)
is the result of an external force and is of sufficient magnitude to interfere with daily life.
Traumatic Brain Injury
is defined as the consequence of direct contact to the head/brain during the instant of initial injury, causing extracranial focal injuries.
Primary Injury
continuation of damage to the brain as a result of physiologic effects of primary injury.
Secondary Injury
explains the dynamic equilibrium of cranial contents.
Monro-Kellie Hypothesis
trauma may result in an abrasion, contusion, laceration, or subgaleal hematoma.
Scalp Injury
is a break in the continuity of the skull caused by forceful trauma.
Skull Fractures
Damage to the brain from traumatic injury takes two forms:
*Primary Injury
*Secondary Injury
What are the type of skull fractures:
*Linear
*comminuted
*depressed skull fractures
is a break in the continuity of the bone.
Simple (Linear) fracture
refers to a splintered or multiple fracture line
Comminuted Skull Fracture
occur when the bones of the skull are forcefully displaced downward.
Depressed Skull Fracture
A fracture of the base of the skull is referred to as
Basal Skull Fracture
what is the medical management for depressed skull fractures?
Surgery with elevation of the skull and debridement
occurs when the head accelerates and then rapidly decelerates or collides with another object
Traumatic Brain injury, closed (blunt)
occurs when an object penetrates the skull, enters the brain, and damages the soft brain tissue in its path.
Traumatic brain injury, open (penetrating)
Focal injuries include
contusions and several types of hematomas
what are major diffuse injuries?
Concussion and Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI)
This brain injury is when the brain is bruised and damages in a specific area because of severe acceleration-deceleration force or blunt trauma.
Contusion
are collections of blood in the brain
Intracranial Hematomas
After a head injury, blood may collect in the epidural space between the skull and the dura mater.
Epidural Hematoma
is a collection of blood between the dura and the brain, a space normally occupied by a thin cushion of fluid.
Subdural Hematoma (SDH)
is bleeding into the parenchyma of the brain
Intracerebral Hemorrhage
is a temporary loss of neurologic function with no apparent structural damage to the brain.
Concussion
results from widespread shearing and rotational forces that produce damage throughout the brain.
Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI)
